DJ Stout is a fifth generation Texan born in the small west Texas town of Alpine. He received a BFA in design communication with a... minor in illustration from Texas Tech University where he has been honored as a distinguished alumnus.
DJ began his design career in Dallas in 1981 as art director for Robert A. Wilson Associates, a corporate communications firm with clients like Ross Perot’s EDS (Electronic Data Systems), TXI (Texas Industries), Pearle Vision Centers, Cadillac Fairview, Beck Construction and Arthur Andersen. In 1987 DJ became the Art Director of Texas Monthly magazine in Austin. During his thirteen-year tenure at Texas Monthly the prestigious regional magazine was nominated for twelve National Magazine awards and was the recipient of the award in the categories of best photography and general excellence in 1990 and again for general excellence in 1992.
DJ joined Pentagram Design as a partner in the Austin, Texas office in January of 2000 where he continues to specialize in the areas of publication design, magazine redesign, books, and editorial consultation as well as a wide range of projects including catalogs, branding, identity, annual reports, package design, interactive media, sales and marketing promotions, and exhibition design. Pentagram, which was founded
in London in 1972 by five designers—an architect, a product designer and three graphic designers—currently has five offices around the world.

DJ has been awarded numerous medals and awards from national and international graphic design organizations including the Art Directors Club of New York, the Society
of Publication Designers, the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA), and the Society of Illustrators. In a special 1998 issue of American Photography Magazine he was selected as one of the “100 Most Important People in Photography.” In 2004 I.D. (International Design) magazine profiled DJ as one of its “Fifty American Designers.” In 2010 the Society of Illustrators awarded him the national Richard Gangel Art Director Award, an annual designation that honors art directors who have supported and advanced the art of illustration. That same year the AIGA recognized DJ as a Fellow Award recipient for his exceptional contributions to the field of graphic design. DJ’s work has appeared in many graphic design publications and annuals and he is frequently asked to speak about design and to judge competitions around the world.
DJ is the author of three books. On the occasion of Texas Monthly’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 1998 DJ wrote, co-curated and designed The Pictures of Texas Monthly: Twenty-Five Years which was published by Stewart Tabori & Chang. In 2010 DJ designed and authored The Amazing Tale of Mr. Herbert and His Fabulous Alpine Cowboys Baseball Club: An Illustrated History of the Best Little Semipro Baseball Team in Texas which was published by the University of Texas Press. UT Press also published DJ’s over thirty-year design career retrospective, Variations on a Rectangle, in 2015.
DJ’s design work is represented in several permanent collections including the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, The Contemporary Austin, The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University, the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas, and the Library of Congress.Read More
