Bio:
David L. Sigman returned to teaching in the Visual Communications Design program following his second appointment as Chair of the Department of Art and Design... at Purdue University in 2012 and stepped down as Chair this June 30, 2015. In 2009, following 11 years as Head of The Patti and Rusty Rueff School of Visual and Performing Arts at Purdue University David returned to research and teaching in the Visual Communications Design program. Preceding assuming the Head’s position David was Chair of the Division of Art & Design for four years. In 1988 David joined the faculty in Visual Communications Design. His educational background includes a B.F.A in 1971 from the Kansas City Art Institute in Graphic Design and a M.F.A. in Advertising Design from Syracuse University in 1979. Prior to joining the faculty at Purdue David had over 20 years professional experience as a designer and design administrator. As Creative Director for Creative Advertising he developed national and international campaigns for Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, Pinkerton Tobacco, L.S. Heath & Company and Ebonite Bowling Equipment. He has held design positions with the Hopkins Center Design Studio at Dartmouth College, Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and was Supervisor, Media Materials Development and Dissemination for the National Institute of Handicapped Research. David’s poster designs have been recognized with awards and publication by Graphis Poster Annual 2017, Graphis Design Annual 2017, Graphis Poster Annual 2016, Graphis Poster Annual 2015, International City Branding Design Exhibition, Busan, Korea, 2015 Graphis Poster Annual, The 16th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw, Poland, The 18th International Biennale of Graphic Design in Brno, Czech Republic, The 5th International Triennial of Poster at The Museum of Modern Art, Toyama, Japan, XII International Poster Biennial in Finland, 12th Annual World’s Most Memorable Poster, UNESCO, Paris, France. Posters in the Paris exhibition represented 42 countries; David’s poster was one of 70 selected from the Paris exhibition to participate in an international traveling exhibition scheduled for the United States, Japan, China and Korea. David also participated in the International Invitational FAX ART Exhibition at the Central Academy of Fine Art, Beijing, China as well as the U.S. Library of Congress selecting six posters for the library’s permanent collection and the Museum for Art and Industry in Hamburg, Germany added David’s posters to their graphic design permanent collection. He has received two silver awards for poster design from the University & College Designers Association. The posters were included in a group design exhibition in New York. David’s work also received recognition from the International Design by Electronic Association, PRINT’S Digital Art and Design Annuals, Regional Design Annuals and PRINT’S Best of Letterhead & Business Cards, American Corporate Identity Annuals. Other recognition includes over 20 Addy Awards for design and 2 National Television Bureau Awards for television commercials.
