How did you manage to get such great results with this photograph?
Persistence! Woody Allen said that “Eighty percent of success is showing up.” I’m constantly thinking of visual ideas and how to fine tune and present them in the most aesthetically graphic and simplest way.
To produce the best work for a client, what is the ideal working relationship between you and an art director or designer?
I’ve been very for fortunate to have worked with great designers, art directors and clients worldwide in print and in film. One thing that they all seemed to have in common in print was that, after an initial meeting, they left the artist alone to do what he or she did best. It was this extension of freedom and trust that provided the fertile ground for producing great work. Conversely, later in my career as a film director, perhaps due to the sheer volume of people and the logistics necessary to produce a film or a high-end commercial, I came to believe and understand that collaboration was the soil in which great ideas and works are harvested.
How do you balance commercial work and personal work?
At this point in time, I’m very selective when it comes to accepting commercial work. My personal works both in print and film are extremely vital to me and they are my primary focus.
