Set in an isolated mountain village in 19th century Macedonia, You Won't Be Alone follows a young girl who is kidnapped and then transformed into a witch by an ancient spirit. After learning she is able to shape shift, she continues to wield this horrific power in order to understand what it means to be human. Given the extreme and unorthodox nature of this story, it was important for us to convey the beauty and poetry of its themes in a visually arresting way, that alluded to the eerie creepiness of the story, without going to horror.

The line between drama and horror was a thin line to walk considering the dark tones, themes and supernatural occurrences in the story. It was extremely important to us to not cross over into horror, however we were able to establish an unsettling feeling through specific cropping, obscuring of facial features and most importantly a palate of darker earthy tones. The witch’s claw was also another visual element that helped us allude to a supernatural element without falling into predictable or overused tropes.

We ultimately arrived at a striking piece that conveyed a sense of internal conflict that the client was very pleased with. The art ultimately made its appearance at Sundance where the film was met with critical acclaim.
