When 1220 Artisan Spirits introduced whiskey to their spirits line, they turned to TOKY to create the branding and packaging. The Withered Oak brand had to reflect the quality and time that goes into every bottle of this 5-year aged aged bourbon and stand out among its premium competitors.
To help differentiate from the crowded whiskey market, we pared the design down to a few simple elements. This approach went against the grain of the decorative Western typography that is so common in the whiskey space. The use of a classic serif combined with monospaced typography give the simple typographic label a distinct and elevated appearance. The logo is painted on the bottle to let the warm color of the whiskey shine through, emphasizing its age and character. A wax seal and a batch number are applied by hand, signaling that Withering Oak is a premium, limited edition spirit.
This first attempt in the whiskey category was a first-rate success. Withered Oak sold all its bottles within an hour of the release party. Since then, they have grown their whiskey offerings to include three additional bourbon blends and an aged rye, earning Withered Oak its rightful place as a distinctive local bourbon.
