Our assignment for LIMBO, a film about Omar— a young Syrian refugee who is forced to leave home to avoid being sent to war— was to bring a quirky, upbeat tone to an otherwise difficult, heartbreaking story. We wanted to create key art that depicted Omar’s journey with a fresh and hopeful perspective.
We wanted to show the men in the phone booth, which is their one connection to their lives before becoming refugees. The film has a Wes Anderson feel to it, so doing an illustration felt like it would match the quirky, heartfelt vibe of the film.
The movie garnered critical accolades and provided an important perspective on the reality of refugee life. The client loved this presentation and Cold Open is still getting praise for the film’s final art.
