This project started off as a self-reflective assignment where I was asked to think of a phrase, or "mantra", that was meaningful to me. From there, the goal was to reflect this meaning in a visual manner. The media choice and execution was completely up to me and my creativity.
The phrase I chose was, "lean forward", which is all about embracing your challenges in life. When faced with difficulty or struggle, it is important to lean into whatever it is in order to overcome them and grow as a person. In order to reflect this visually, I chose to relate it to skiing. When skiing down a slope, it is important to lean forward to stay on top of the snow and conquer the mountain. If you lean backwards, you will likely fall. For this project, my solution was to create a typographic illustration of a someone skiing down a mountain, with my phrase, "lean forward", hand-lettered in the cloud of snow. The colors of the piece reflect vintage ski posters, while allowing the red letters to pop out as the hero of the poster.
Overall, I was very happy with how this project turned out. Every time I look at it, I understand the idea of leaning forward in life and it is a nice reminder to do so when I am facing challenges and struggles.
