This cover centers around a publication called Groove. A lifestyle magazine focused on feminism, style, and music, Groove invokes the colors, patterns, and typography of the 1970s with a distinctly modern twist. The banner was designed first, using letterforms manipulated from a royalty-free clip art book. The imagery followed next. Like the magazine, I wanted the imagery to feel modern but have retro inspiration. Typographically, I chose fonts that invoked the thick-thin contrast and unique shapes of psychadelic poster designs. Color was the most challenging aspect, and I explored many variations before settling on this high-contrast burgundy and yellow palette.
