When Paper Meets Light in Carlos Caicedo’s Lens

GraphisOctober 21, 2025

For more than five decades, Carlos Caicedo has redefined visual storytelling through his mastery of design, painting, and photography. A creative force whose work transcends boundaries, Caicedo continues to explore the delicate balance between form and emotion—transforming the simple into the extraordinary. His latest photographic series turns humble materials like paper into poetic abstractions of light, shadow, and imagination. Each image invites viewers to rediscover the beauty of what is often overlooked, a signature of Caicedo’s boundless creative curiosity.

My creative journey

In making art, I always say that the process is usually more enjoyable and stimulating than the final result. You start a project with a blank canvas, where nothing has been scripted. It’s you and your endless possibilities. Everything plays. I am my own client. I am the audience. Once the project has been completed, the public is in charge. You rely on others to keep your work alive. The “acceptance” word comes into play, and it’s out of your control.

The subject

Paper and pencils have been my lifetime companions, not simply tools. In the digital age, these humble objects remain stubbornly familiar, and our connection goes back to our early memories. It’s a physical and emotional relationship. A yellow pencil in a child’s fist, moving on blue-lined paper and discovering a world that was not there a minute ago. The weight of a book and the sound of the paper as we turn the pages, the curve it makes, and how shadows move with it. These are pleasures that haptics can’t mimic.

My photos depicting paper are part of that journey of discovery. It’s looking at them with a new eye. It’s about discovering how shape, color, and light can transport us into a new and refreshing world you can call abstract. It’s a game where what we see comes from us, not what’s there. It’s a game where imagination is keen. It’s an invitation to join, to play, and to see what you ignore because paper is such a part of your own daily life. My current bulk of work reflects that journey.

The process

I start with a flat piece of paper. By cutting, folding, and twisting, I create mid-size sculptures. My initial intention is not to put together a specific form or figure. With light as translator, I let the paper talk to me and to my lens. I add bouncing color, and find shapes and forms I didn’t see before. The entire process takes effect in camera. And I sometimes add contrast in post.

The result

Based on what I see with the final image, I give a title, and sometimes I will write a short script. People react surprisingly, adding comments, suggesting new titles, or adding their own twist. That’s when the real dialogue with the audience takes place.
