Ancient Artistry Meets Modern Celebration with a Dunhuang-Inspired Gift Box
When the New Year approaches, so too does the ancient tradition of giving—and with it, the opportunity to honor cultural heritage through thoughtful design. Shenzhen Tigerpan Packaging Design Co., Ltd.’s award-winning gift box for Bestore Co., Ltd. offers a masterful fusion of past and present, drawing inspiration from the timeless beauty of Dunhuang’s mural art while celebrating the vibrant spirit of modern festivities.
The design addresses a significant cultural mission: protecting and reviving traditional Chinese art forms that risk fading from modern memory. Through this project, ancient artistry finds new life in contemporary packaging, inviting recipients to experience not just a gift but a cultural celebration wrapped in color, craftsmanship, and profound meaning.

This year’s New Year gift box breaks away from traditional consumer expectations in both material and visual concepts. Drawing from traditional Dunhuang elements while celebrating the festive and joyful spirit of the New Year, the design features a reinterpretation of the mural Musicians and Dancers from Cave 112 of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang. Through modern illustration, the mural is reimagined and infused with symbols of celebration, such as lion dances, lanterns, firecrackers, and koi fish. The resulting image is a joyful gathering of deities—symbolizing ordinary people—celebrating together in harmony and happiness. The poetic couplet, “Music and dance bring blessings to the hall; the whole world gathers to celebrate the New Year,” encapsulates the core message we wish to convey through the design.

The design of the “Twelve Classics” gift box draws inspiration from ancient Chinese imperial food containers. The inner compartments combine small square boxes with a central divider, making the packaging not only functional for presentation but also reusable as a serving tray for snacks.

For the color palette, we preserved the essence of traditional Dunhuang hues while adapting them to the festive spirit of the New Year. Brighter, more vivid tones—especially reds—dominate the composition, accented with touches of jade green and turquoise blue to create rich visual layering.

In terms of production techniques, the background red is printed with a dedicated spot color combined with vibrant CMYK printing. Selective gold foil stamping adds a refined finishing touch, while the use of holographic electroplated aluminum enhances the overall sense of luxury and premium quality.
